How accurate is calorie tracking from a meal photo?

A meal photo can produce a useful calorie estimate, but it cannot be perfectly accurate because a camera does not know the exact weight of every food or see hidden ingredients. When a rough estimate is enough

If the alternative is leaving the meal out entirely, a reasonable estimate usually gives the daily and weekly diary more information than a blank. Repeated logging also reveals patterns: large portions on certain days, meals that are consistently low in protein, or a gap between planned and actual intake.

The required precision depends on the decision. Someone learning the shape of their normal diet may be well served by approximate entries. Someone preparing for a sport with a narrow weight class may need a scale, recipe-level data and professional guidance.

How to improve a photo entry without turning dinner into admin

  • Photograph the whole plate in good light and avoid covering one food with another.
  • Mention oils, dressings, sweetened drinks and other calorie-dense items that may not be obvious.
  • Give a weight for the part of the meal where precision matters most, rather than weighing everything by default.
  • Use a barcode for a packaged product when its label differs from a generic version.
  • Correct a recurring food once so its usual portion is easier to recognize later.

A single meal estimate contains uncertainty, and a single weigh-in contains noise. The practical question is whether the diary is consistent enough to explain the direction of the weight trend across time. Small overestimates and underestimates can partly balance across many meals; large systematic omissions, such as never logging cooking oil, do not.
